Blogging Tip: Know Your Reader

When it comes to knowing what to post on your blog, it's important to know your audience.

There are some industries where a blog can end up being very dry and bland when it's only about academic topics within the field.  However, if your audience is the industry academics, then your blog is spot-on.

But if your targeted audience is after different media, then you'll need to make sure you're providing something engaging to your visitors, such as:

Videos

Your time commitment here will vary based on how much editing you feel you need to do. If you're already posting videos on social media, then you can also embed a few favorites into blog articles on your website.  Be sure to link to your social profile in the blog article to encourage visitors to see additional content posted on those sites.

Personalized Content

If you are your brand, then your existing and potential customers need to know more about you as a person. Write an article about something you're passionate about, even if it's not directly related to your business/services.

  • Real estate agents who are skilled bakers can post a favorite recipe (maybe one that makes a house smell amazing?)
  • Insurance agents who are antique car enthusiasts can write about their current project car (and maybe promote classic car insurance too).
  • Fence contractors can show off the projects on their farm (and promote the brand of fencing they just installed around their pasture).

What to Avoid

Don't post an article just to have something on the page and check off your task for the week.  No visitor will find it valuable to read an "article" that says "I'm excited for the beautiful weather this weekend!" Be sure that whatever you post is something you'd find valuable too.
